The beauty of Ghia Coachwork.

The original Ghia is an Italian brand of car, which is one of the most elegant and well-designed cars around Europe and the world. The seventies was the best season for Ghia, because it began to be the best business with very highs incomes.

Since then the original Ghia has been one of the favorite cars around the world. Today Ghia produce a lot of similar prototype of these cars under the Ford logo.

A little bit more about the original Ghia Coachwork

This is call Ghia because its creator’s name was Giacinto Ghia, he was the most famous man in Italy who knows everything about coachworks, and he was the one who put his name as an original Ghia. In 1915 he created his own company together with some partners. At that time his job was to help with the coachwork of the cars, they were made of aluminum. In 1929 the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500, car that he work in its coachwork, won the Mille Miglia, he was amazing reducing the heavy mass from the coachworks.

The production of these kind of coachwork’s cars was stable from 1918 to 1939, at that time Ghia made a partnership with Alfa Romeo FIAT and Lancia. All people from that time remember very well the FIAT 508 Balilla, which was the best car of the year 1933. This great heyday was interrupted by the World War II. Sadly they lost the original Ghia because it was bombed, and awhile they were looking for other place to place the factory Ghia died, it was in February 1944.

So his children decided to sell the factory and company to Mario Boano and Giorgio Alberti, they both were great car designers and very much in business they started developing the company making expositions and showrooms. At the beginning they had as a customer the great Ferrari, and they were the ones who put the coachwork to so many models during 1950 and 1956. Today these cars are sought for collectors, who don’t care if they need to pay high amounts of money.

In the 50’s Ghia coachwork factory status was very high because the hard work of the Italians Mario Boano and Giorgio Alberti; and the important partnership with the Americans Ford and Chrysler. The great car and coachwork designer Pietro Frua worked for Ghia Company from 1957 to 1960. For some time Ghia Company was sold and bought by so many businessmen, in 1967 all the company of Ghia belonged to the Argentinian Alejandro De Tomaso, who was from then the President and the only Managing Director of the Italian coachworks company. He did great projects and interesting coachworks in the original Ghia. He made a four doors one called Iso Fidia, and another one called Simun Coupe. And in 1969 he presented a great caterpillar automobile especially for the snow called “Snow Ghia.”

The destiny and the end of the original Ghia

In 1970 the original Ghia was bought once more by Ford Motor Company in 1970. The 80% of other actionists were majority against the 20% company shares of Alejandro De Tomaso. But everyone was okay with him as a President of the company until 1972, the year he sold all his company shares to Ford.

When Ford had the absolute power over the original Ghia, was developed De Tomaso Pantera making of this with different look, style and color. After some years Ford presented the Ford Granada, the great Mustang II, the Capri II, and so many others. In 1992 Ford presented the Ford Focus Concept, a very interesting car with the most amazing coachwork never seen before.

For Ford Europe the original Ghia had designed the Granada Ford, Cortina, Orion, Capri, Scorpio, Sierra, Focus and so others more. It was amazing that Ford/ Ghia produced and designed coachworks for the American market, and step by step they were producers for all North America and South America as well.

They produced for Australia as well. Sadly from 2008 the cars are not called Ghia anymore, because Ford changed for “Titanium.” So in 2008 was the last production of the great Ghia Ford Fiesta in United Kingdom. Without doubt Ghia was one of the most amazing coachwork around the world, it made beautiful and more approachable so many cars. We can say all the companies should be grateful to the original Ghia forever.
