Sir. Malcolm Campbell.
Nobody got what he got, nobody could beat him on races, especially on the records. The amazing Sir Malcom Campbell was an interesting and extraordinary driver that had so many trials from the beginning, such as his rheumatic disease that affected his heart a very young age. But he overcame all obstacles and became the most amazing racer in the world. He broke the world land speed record more than nine times during the mid-twenties and the late thirties, also he broke the world water speed record, and as that were not enough he was a motorcycles driver as well. He called his cars and boats “Blue bird,” they became so famous around the world.
A brief history of the amazing Malcom Campbell
The amazing Sir Malcom Campbell had born in London in 1885. Since he was a very young man he loved to speed driving bicycles in Germany. He got three medals from 1906-1909. He didn’t know for sure what to do or follow but in the end he decided to be an automobile racer, and he started this dream in Brook lands, England in 1910. After some time he called himself “The blue bird,” he drove boats on competitions as well. In 1931 he was knighted. This “blue bird” (his cars and boats had the form and color of a bird, and they were very elegant) raced and made new records in competitions places, such as Utah, Florida, and so other places.
In 1926 was made the second “blue bird” for the amazing Sir Malcom Campbell, and with it he made a new land speed record in South Wales, the record was 174. 883 mph. Not happy with that he made another record at Daytona with a record of 206.956 mph in 1928. And he won himself record at Daytona as well some time later with a record of 276.82 mph in 1935. But he had high expectations, now he wanted to set a record of 300 mph. So the manufacturers of the great “Blue bird” made all the arrangements to make it happen, this car had a weight of more than five tons and a length of twenty eight feet, it had 2500 horsepower engine, and because that it had a expectation of a three minutes of life span.
In 1935 the amazing Sir Malcom Campbell drove the “Blue bird” for last time at age of 50 years old, setting a land speed record of 301.13 mph at Bonneville. He knew his record next day while he was preparing himself for the next run. In this way he finished his racing on land, and began his new great adventure, racing on water, so now his goal was to enter to the World Water Speed Records.
So now the “Blue bird” was on water, and as it is to be expected this great racer set so many new speed records in the 30´s. The amazing Sir Malcom Campbell died in 1949 after a long illness. His son Donald Campbell succeeded him and because is something they had in their blood, he brook the record as well, with 400 mph. So every time racers talk or discussed about records and everything it is impossible not to mention these two legends of the world speed.
This record was broke later on the late 90’s for the Britain Andy Green with a record of 763.035 mph, it was the first time that someone could break the Campbell family record.
The amazing Blue bird
His only driver was the amazing Sir Malcolm Campbell, it had 350 Horse Power engine, in 1922 it was set the first record with the Blue bird of 138.08 mph. Campbell chose the name Blue bird from a French play, which is about seeking happiness, and a blue bird is the sign of it. In 1927 Malcolm set another International land speed record of 174.88 mph, the Blue bird by that time had 12 cylinders and 450 Horse Power. He set new records in England, America, Africa, and so many others.
